Jérôme Gautié wins the 2021 AFSE Book Prize

The French Association of Economic Science (AFSE) Book Prize in the “Paperback” category is awarded to Jérôme Gautié for his book Le salaire minimum et l’emploi (The Minimum Wage and Employment), Presses de Sciences Po, 2020, 136 pp.

Is the minimum wage necessarily the enemy of employment? The controversy continues unabated, particularly in France, over this legal threshold, the first forms of which were introduced over a century ago to combat poverty wages. Yet its mechanisms have long been known. Studies conducted by economists in the many countries where it is practiced show that its introduction or increase can, depending on the situation, have negative, null, or positive effects on employment.

The empirical results presented allow us to reflect on the appropriate use of the minimum wage in our post-industrial societies marked by a growing polarization between a wealthy class with high purchasing power and an army of low-wage workers.
