About us

The Centre d’Économie de la Sorbonne (CES) is a joint research unit (UMR 8174) created in 2006, bringing together three major institutions: the University Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, the CNRS, and the IRD. Located in the heart of Paris, it brings together a community of around 100 permanent faculty members and an equal number of doctoral candidates, developing cutting-edge, open, and interdisciplinary research in economics.

  • A Leading Centre for Economic Research

Today, CES is widely recognized as one of the leading economic research institutions in France (ranked among the top 5% in France according to RePEc). Its researchers publish regularly in prestigious international journals and play an active role in major academic networks (See our publications).

CES recruits at both the national and international levels, attracting scholars from the United Kingdom, Germany, Switzerland, Canada, and beyond. It is also highly active in securing research funding, with more than fifteen European projects obtained over the past decade, alongside numerous national grants (ANR) and other sources of support.

  • An Interdisciplinary Approach

CES grounds its scientific strategy in the quality of its research, a respect for methodological diversity, and a strong commitment to interdisciplinarity in economics.

Its research activities are structured around six groups: Behavioral Sciences; Economic Theory; Economy & Society; Finance; Globalization, Labor & Public Policies; and Sustainable Development Economics. CES has also recently been awarded three junior professorship chairs at the University Paris 1: “Neurosciences and Behavioral Economics” (2022), “Data Sciences for Sustainable Development” (2023), and “Algorithms and Regulation of Socio-Economic Networks” (2025), strengthening its visibility in these emerging fields.

The unit’s strengths lie in the diversity of its approaches and expertise in economics, as well as in its many interdisciplinary collaborations—not only with other social sciences (sociology, political science, and history) but also with psychology, mathematics, physics, and computer science.

In addition, CES benefits from several platforms and facilities supporting its scientific policy: the CES Documentation Center (CESDoc), the Laboratory for Experimental Economics of Paris (LEEP), and the AI Lab for Human and Social Sciences.

  • A Commitment to Socially Relevant Research

At CES, many researchers are deeply engaged with real-world challenges, contributing actively to public debates and policy discussions.

Beyond academic contributions, CES maintains strong connections with public institutions, international organizations, NGOs, and civil society. Two research chairs are hosted by CES: the ESOPS Chair and the PcEN Chair. Through these partnerships, CES ensures that its research generates tangible impact—shaping debates and informing policies in France and beyond.
