Eradicating Poverty: Pathways towards Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals

The ADAPTED SDG Forum took place on November 26, 2024, in Gordons Bay, Cape Town, South Africa, as part of the ADAPTED Final Conference titled “Eradicating Poverty: Pathways towards Achieving the Sustainable Development Goal.” The event brought together researchers, policymakers, and practitioners to discuss innovative approaches to poverty reduction, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Organizers: ADAPTED consortium, comprising five European universities, seven African partner universities, and leading European development organizations and think tanks.

🔍 Research Themes & Workshop Sessions

The forum featured three parallel workshops, each focusing on a critical aspect of poverty reduction:

  1. Validating Pathways to Poverty Reduction
    Exploring empirical evidence and theoretical frameworks to identify effective strategies for poverty alleviation.

  2. Studying Interactions Between Poverty Reduction and Other Policy Areas
    Analyzing the interconnections between poverty reduction efforts and other policy domains, such as education, health, and governance.

  3. Optimizing the Impact of Poverty Reduction-Related Policies
    Evaluating existing policies and proposing enhancements to maximize their effectiveness in reducing poverty.

🧑‍🔬 Early Career Researchers Presentations

Fifteen early career researchers presented their findings across these workshops, addressing topics such as:

>The role of Chinese and U.S. aid in influencing foreign direct investment flows to developing countries.

>Governance interactions between SDG 1 (No Poverty) and the Paris Agreement in Sub-Saharan Africa.

>The impact of mining activities on migration patterns in Africa.

>Social protection systems and their coherence in South Africa and Uganda.

>Institutional processes in building social registries in Kenya.
